An Historic Inn

This well preserved colonial style home was built circa 1850s and sold in 1928 to Mrs. Margaret Holland Cannarn, whose husband died at age 31, a victim of the 1918 influenza epidemic. Margaret converted the home into an inn, naming it in honor of her grandparents who came to this country at the time the railway began service through Northfield.

For decades, she served her guests bountiful New England meals and a provided them a comfortable resting place along their journeys. Older folks fondly remember Margaret's famous maple cream carmel candies that she made by hand on the wood fired cookstove, still on display in the dining room.

We are grateful to Mrs. Connarn for preserving the charm of this old New England home with its spacious wrap-around porch and lovely glassed in sunporch. We strive to continue her tradition of welcoming guests for an overnight or even longer-term visit to the community of Northfield and the home of Norwich University.
